Strengthening border management capabilities is an
integral part of IOM’s endeavors to facilitate safe human
mobility while ensuring border security for the concerned
states. What noteworthy initiatives has IOM undertaken in
this domain?
IOM extends support to member states where its offices
are located by enhancing the capacities of migration
officials, aiding them in improving their capabilities for
more effective performance of their duties. Capacity-
building initiatives encompass a spectrum of activities,
ranging from specialized training courses to general
exercises. Additionally, IOM engages in rehabilitation
efforts for border crossing points and operational centers,
alongside supplying relevant technological equipment for
specific projects.
Furthermore, IOM facilitates the organization of

regional workshops and meetings, bringing together
officials from the region and neighboring countries to
discuss common challenges. The aim is to find common
ground and formulate recommendations that can serve
as a foundation for subsequent workshops. The inaugural
event of the Arab Center for Technical Cooperation on
Migration and Border Management, held earlier this year
in the Kingdom of Bahrain, focused on the theme of Legal
Identity: Border Security and Safe Mobility. Participating
Arab countries shared their national experiences and best
practices on this topic.

number of international migrants is estimated to exceed 272
million. In 2019, international migrants constituted 3.5%
of the world›s population. What are the most prominent
challenges faced by migrants worldwide?
Migrants encounter various difficulties during their stay
in host countries or while passing through them. One of
the most significant issues is the lack of legal identity.
Many migrants leave their home countries without official
